Good cartoons vs not so good cartoons

I have always been a Disney Channel lover-
but the shows used to be so different when I was younger...
what happened to Care Bears? Smurfs? Gummy Bears?

Now, every morning, we would watch:

Mickey Mouse Clubhouse
Handy Manny
Imagination Movers
Agent Oso
etc.

Once in a while we'd go to Nick Jr. and watch Dora...

Negatives:
same shows!
there are only like 4-5 episodes- and i am SOO tired of the same ones.
The songs get kind of boring.

We have recently been watching channel 11- Kbyu in the mornings.
I am liking it!
Honestly-
Sid the Science Kid is fun! and the songs are catchy.... :)

*What cartoons do your kids watch?
*What movies/learning tapes do you expose them to?

(example- Baby Einstein, Signing Times, etc.)

*How much T.V. do you allow your kids to watch per day?
*How is that determined, by age?

I'd like to expand my horizon!!

Please share-- any ideas you have, websites you like, movies you love...
it's good for us moms, and our kids, to try new things.

  1. Ha! We love TV at our house, and I try to limit Andrew to 2 hours or less per day...sometimes, it's definitely more. ;) I love Sid and SuperWhy...both instrumental in Andrew's intelligence. Heaven knows it isn't hereditary. We like Signing Time and I like Imagination Movers because Andrew prefers real people. Movies, we also like musicals, Singin' in the Rain is at the top of our list.

  2. K & C each have 30 minutes of screen time of their choice: an approved TV show, computer or video games.

We discovered that if we let them watch more than 1 1/2 hours of their shows they became ornery and whiny.

    L watches between 20-80 minutes: Team Umizoomi/Diego(while I shower)then maybe Sesame Street.

The boys watch the following shows, although they have a few more options in the TiVo:

Disney - Shaun the Sheep, Agent Oso, Handy Manny, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse.

Nickelodeon - Team Umizoomi, GO Diego GO

PBS- Electric Company, Fetch with Ruff Ruffman, Cyberchase, SuperWhy.

KBYU- Animated Hero Classics, Animated Stories from the New Testament.

    Ion- 3-2-1 Penguins

In addition to their chosen TV shows, sometimes they watch with us: Nova, The Universe, Life, Deadliest Catch, Mythbusters, Jeopardy, Are you smarter than a 5th Grader?, America's Got Talent, Good Eats, Chopped, The Next Food Network Star, etc. . .

On Fridays, we like to have movie night. We pick, unless they have earned enough points to rent something for themselves. It's usually Scooby Doo, Mario or Sonic the Hedgehog.

Computer time- They usually like to go to our family blog or their blog. Sometimes they will use Starfall.com or Playhouse Disney.

Video games- We really don't have a wide selection. They love to play Family Game Night or Super Mario Brothers Wii.

  3. Tyler loves to play computer games on pbskids.com and disney.com. For TV shows we recently discovered channel 119 Sprouts. Basic cable that we all have has it. It does all the old school cartoons like Bernstein Bears, Thomas the Engine, etc. The Sprout people between the shows are super cheesy so I can't take it for too long. But my kids love it. That and PBS is big at our house.

  4. By Andrew- it really means Candace is posting here. Ethan and Hudson are also big fans of Sprout. In specific they like Fireman Sam and Chloe's Closet. And they never ever tire of Curious George- I think Hudson sincerely believes that George is his best friend in this world. For some reason my boys are not at all interested in the Disney or Nick Jr shows. I think Ethan sees that none of the older kids watch them and he wants to be cool so he stays away from them and Hudson just wants to be like his older bro and follows suit. They are allowed to watch TV mostly just during transitional times.... Don't judge me forever, but it mostly serves a babysitter role during these times; ex. me getting ready for my day in the morning and making dinner in the evening.

But, since my kids are not exactly the sit and veg type we have to change it up a lot. So their media time changes from day to day- sometimes they really like the computer and play on lego, pbskids, zoinkspoints (Scooby Doo), cartoonnetwork (Hot Wheels Battle Force 5 and Super Hero Squad), or starfall; other days they prefer to play Super Mario Galaxy on our Wii; and other days they like to watch old movies they've had forever.

But for the most part they would rather run, jump, and climb on everything in the house or better yet they would rather be outside playing with friends. We don't really have limits on their TV watching because it hasn't really been a problem for them to want to spend a lot of time watching it, but if it seemed like it did we would definitely set some time restraints. Although I think it would have to be a house rule and not determined by age- I think it would be hard to enforce or follow otherwise.

I will say that the Letter Factory video by Leapfrog taught Ethan all the letters and sounds in a day. I had been working with him (fruitlessly) for a LONG time to get the letters, but it didn't really click until he watched that video a couple times. So score 1 for the TV and none for pushy mom! :)
